Baumgartner Goes 5-5 To Lead ASU Over Austin Peay, 11-2

JONESBORO (3/11/11) – Senior centerfielder Todd Baumgartner went 5-5 from the plate with an RBI and four runs scored to lead the Arkansas State baseball team to a 11-2 win over Austin Peay in the opening game of a three-game series Friday night at Tomlinson Stadium and Kell Field.

The Red Wolves improved to 7-8 on the season winning its third-straight contest and the fifth out of the last seven. Austin Peay fell to 7-5 on the season dropping its second-straight game.

ASU outhit the Governors 11-2 and got all of its scoring in the second, fifth, seventh and eighth innings.

“We strung together some quality at bats...and it's hard for a defense to defend that when we can do that and get guys on base,” said ASU head coach Tommy Raffo. “Give credit to some of our guys for focusing through some of the at bats especially late in the game. Baumgartner had a good night for us going 5-5 having some really tough at bats that really broke it open for us and got the guys juiced up. I think he really helped our lineup tonight.”

The Red Wolves jumped out to a 2-0 lead when Michael George plated Baumgartner on a one-out ground-out. Ryan Emery then drove in Castaldo on an RBI single down the left field line.

ASU added two runs in the fifth inning when Castaldo extended his hitting streak to 24 games to drive in Michael Faulkner. George then hit into a fielder's choice to score Baumgartner.

Big innings in the seventh and eighth gave the Red Wolves their final 11-2 lead. Faulkner, Baumgartner, George and Castaldo all scored in the seventh on hits by Baumgartner, George and Tyler Smith as the Red Wolves batted completely around during the inning.

In the eighth, ASU picked up three more runs when Baumgartner scored after the bases were loaded and Hecht was hit by a pitch. Dustin Jones then entered the game and hit an RBI single before Emery scored on a wild pitch.

Andy Ferguson picked up the win for the Red Wolves, pitching five innings with seven strikeouts improving his record to 2-1 on the year. Daniel Wright and Sam Jew both pitched in relief of Ferguson, neither giving up an earned run through the final four innings.

Emery also posted a multiple hit game for ASU, going 2-3 from the plate with an RBI and run scored.

Faulkner and Baumgartner also picked up their fifth stolen bases of the season while Castaldo got his first theft of the year.

ASU will continue its series with the Governors on Saturday with a 4 p.m. first pitch at Tomlinson Stadium and Kell Field.
