ASU Throwers Finish Competition at Sea Ray Relays

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (4/13/13) – The Arkansas State University track and field team throwers completed action at the 47th annual Sea Ray Relays this Saturday (April 13) with some notable performances at the University of Tennessee's Tom Black Track at LaPorte Stadium in Knoxville, Tenn.

The Red Wolves' first action in the third and final day of competition was in the men's invitational discus where Arkansas State had two individuals place in the top 10.  Junior Chris Nicasio produced ASU's highest finish in Saturday's competition with a fourth-place 169-11.77 (51.81m) effort.  Junior Richard Chavez claimed 10th place after recording a toss of 159-11.69 (48.76m).

The lone event for the ASU women's team was the shot put in which senior Julia Agawu earned sixth place with a school-record throw of 48-11.02 (14.91m).  Agawu surpassed her previous ASU outdoor record of 48-00.75 set at the LSU Relays earlier this season (March 22).  Her personal outdoor season best distance presently marks the 52nd-highest output among the NCAA West Region's top performers this spring.  Junior Kim Raath placed 17th in the event following a 41-10.75 (12.77m) toss.

"We had a really good day today  the Sea Ray Relays," said ASU head coach Jim Patchell.  "I would say top to bottom this was the best single day we have had since I have been here at ASU.  There were more personal bests than I can mention, but Julia Agawu broke her own outdoor record in the shot put.  Hopefully we can carry this forward through our next couple of meets and on into the conference."

Arkansas State will participate in the Vanderbilt Invitational next weekend, April 19-20, at the Vanderbilt Track and Field Complex in Nashville, Tenn.  The Red Wolves will then host   their second annual Red Wolf Open on Saturday, April 27, at the ASU Track and Field Complex in Jonesboro, Ark.
