JONESBORO, Ark. (4/9/14) – The Arkansas State University men's and women's track and field teams are in action this weekend (April 11-12) as the Red Wolves participate in the South Alabama Invitational in Mobile, Ala.
A-State will be taking almost a full squad to the South Alabama Invite with the exception of its throwers, who are traveling to Knoxville, Tenn., for the annual Tennessee Relays to be held April 10-12.
The non-scoring South Alabama Invitational gets underway this Friday (April 11) with field events in the triple jump, hammer throw, pole vault, and shot put all starting at 4:15 p.m. (CT). The meet, which is being held at USA's Jaguar Track, is slated to wrap up Saturday (April 12) starting at 10 a.m. (CT) with four field events – javelin, pole vault, high jump, and long jump. The running events commence with the women's 100-meter hurdles and men's 110-meter hurdles at 11:30 a.m. (CT).
“This is the first year we've gone to South Alabama for a meet,” said A-State head coach Jim Patchell. “There were some fast times there last year and we hope to carry our momentum from Auburn into this meet.”
The Red Wolves' throwers are off to the Tennessee Relays powered by Sea Ray this weekend and are being conducted at the Tom Black Track at LaPorte Stadium on the UT campus. Action for A-State begins this Thursday (April 10) with women's hammer throw at 4 p.m. (CT) proceeded by the men's competition at 6:30 p.m. (CT). The throwing events resume Friday (April 11) with the men's discus at 1 p.m. (CT) and start back up again this Saturday (April 12) at 11 a.m. (CT) with the women's invitational discus. Visit the Tennessee Relays homepage for complete live results and live video along with meet information, schedule of events, and meet records.
“The Tennessee Sea Ray Relays is always a good meet for our throwers,” said Patchell. “They will get a chance to compete against some of the better throwers in the country.”
Arkansas State enters this weekend's action with its women's team listed in 44th place to go with a 41.61 team points total in the week one edition of the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) NCAA Division I National Team Computer Rankings, which were released Tuesday (April 8). The A-State men's team presently occupies 124th-place nationally and has registered a 4.21 team score.
A-State continues competition on the road next weekend, April 18-19, as the Red Wolves will be participating in the Central Arkansas Open in Conway, Ark., while a select number are scheduled to appear in the Mt. SAC Relays in Walnut, Calif. The Red Wolves return home to host the third annual A-State Red Wolves Open April 25-26 at the ASU Track and Field Complex in Jonesboro, Ark.
