Eddowes Leads Decathlon After Day 1 on West Coast

AZUSA/LONG BEACH, Calif. (4/13/23) – Arkansas State track and field freshman Colby Eddowes led Group B in the decathlon at the Bryan Clay Invitational to highlight first day of competition in Southern California Thursday.

Eddowes totaled 4,148 points through the first five events of the decathlon, while Patryk Baran enters Friday's final five portions in sixth place with 3,731 points.

The rookie opened the day with back-to-back top marks in the 100 meters (10.72, 924 points) and the long jump (7.75m/25-5.25, 997 points), the latter which ranks sixth in school history. Baran finished the 100 meters in 10.89 (885 points) before gaining 833 points in the long jump with a leap of 7.08m (23-2.75).  

Baran threw 12.54m (41-1.75) in the shot put for 639 points, with Eddowes finishing with a mark of 11.62m (38-1.5) for 583. Eddowes then took first in the high jump, clearing 2.04m (6-8.25) to tally 840 more points, and Baran clearing 1.80m (5-10.75) for 627.

The duo finished the day with the 400 meters, as Eddowes racked up 804 points with a time of 50.22, while Baran crossed the finish in 51.50 for 747 points to conclude the first half of the event.

In the first day of the meet's distance carnival, Elizabeth Martin clocked a career-best steeplechase time of 10:36.61. Grayson Young followed in the men's steeplechase with a time of 9:02.34 that is fourth in program history.

Sophie Leathers placed 23rd in the first of two women's 10,000 meter invite heats, crossing in 34:35.86. Jaybe Shufelberger then concluded the night with a sixth-place finish and moved to third all-time at A-State in the event with a mark of 34:05.47.

At the Pacific Coast Intercollegiate, held at Long Beach State, Aimar Palma Simo led off the day with a season-best performance in the hammer throw, placing fourth with a mark of 67.44m (221-3).

In the women's shot put, Selase Sampram recorded a throw of 15.28m (50-1.75) to place eighth overall, while Evangelynn Harris finished 23rd with a toss of 14.41m (47-3.5). Sampram later placed 15th in the discus throw, hurling the implement 50.96m (167-2) to move to seventh in school history. Harris finished 34th in the event with a mark of 46.15m (151-5).

Bradley Jelmert cleared 5.01m (16-5.25) to earn a 10th-place finish in the men's pole vault, with Trace South finishing 28th with a clearance of 4.71m (15-5.5).

Willem Coertzen finished 12th in the shot put with a throw of 17.10m (56-1.25), followed by Jaocb Tracy in 17th place with a mark of 16.53m (54-2.75). Tracy later placed 26th in the discus throw, hurling the implement 50.56m (165-10).
