BIRMINGHAM, Ala./SAN MARCOS, Texas/AUSTIN, Texas (3/29/24) – Cash Kunkel ran a facility record in the 3000-meter steeplechase at the UAB Spring Invite on Friday to highlight a strong day for the Arkansas State track and field squads across a trio of meets.
Kunkel clocked a time of 9:04.65 and also moved up to sixth in program history in the event. Andrew Mason finished second, crossing in 10:10.35, and Noah McMurtrey was third with a time of 10:32.78. Kunkel was one of five event winners on the day.
Elizabeth Martin also claimed the top spot in the women's steeplechase, finishing in 10:59.07, ahead of runner-up Mary Beth Bailey (11:28.85). Lizzee Winkler finished in fifth with a time of 12:10.15.
The Red Wolves also swept the men's and women's flat 3000 meters. Olivia Walter won the women's race with a mark of 10:10.80, with Jaybe Shufelberger following behind her in 10:21.73. Delaney Mulick (10:31.35) and Maddie Haldiman (11:11.10) also competed, placing in fourth and eighth place, respectively. Rylan Brown capped the day in the men's 3000, winning with a time of 9:11.07.
Brown also placed second in the men's 1500 meters, behind winner Ryan Parson, who finished in 3:59.22. Benny Brenneman (4:07.48) placed fourth while Zeke McCain was seventh (4:08.73). Abbey Coberly earned a runner-up result in the women's 1500 meters, finishing in 4:50.71, ahead of Hannah McLaughlin in fourth place (4:56.37). Anna Hunter (5:00.86) and Maggie Hunter (5:03.59)
In the men's long jump, newcomer Amarrion Reese made his A-State debut with a runner-up finish, jumping 6.81m (22-4.25). CJ Burge and Will Hart placed 17th and 18th, respectively, in the event.
At the Bobcat Invitational, Alden Wetzel completed his first collegiate decathlon, placing seventh with a score of 6,679 points.
Michelle Ogbemudia was second in the women's hammer throw, hurling the implement 50.91m (167-0). Selase Sampram uncorked a toss of 45.52m (149-4) in an eighth-place finish, while Nyaluet Diew (37.11m/121-9) and Liya Guy (35.13m/115-3) placed 32nd and 34th.
Chris Boyd placed 10th in the men's hammer throw with a mark of 47.35m (155-4) and Menachem Chen registered a distance of 37.69m (123-8) to place 26th.
In the men's long jump, Colby Eddowes leaped 7.53m (24-8.5) in a 14th-place result, while Miranda Burgett finished 18th in the women's 400-meter hurdles with a time of 1:04.31.
Kenyon Parker and Tyra Nabors ran in the prelims of the sprint hurdles at the Clyde Littlefield Texas Relays on Friday. Parker finished 19th in the 110-meter hurdles first round with a time of 14.25, while Nabors was 33rd in the 100-meter hurdles (14.09).
