JONESBORO, Ark. (4/20/24) – Menachem Chen broke the school and facility record in the men's discus throw to highlight Saturday's competition at Arkansas State track and field's inaugural Alumni Classic.
Chen was one of seven event winners on Saturday at the A-State Track & Field Complex, throwing the implement 57.59m (188-11) on his first attempt. It was one of three throws exceeding 182 feet on the day for the freshman, who was one of four A-State throwers to win their respective events.
Noa Isaia placed third behind Chen with a toss of 52.21m (171-3), while Chris Boyd (51.30m/168-4) and Willem Coertzen (51.07m/167-7) placed sixth and seventh.
Coertzen claimed the men's shot put title, throwing 18.08m (59-3.75) to move up to fifth in school history. Chen followed in second with a toss of 16.02m (52-6.75), followed by Boyd in third (15.18m/49-9.75). Alden Wetzel threw 12.57m (41-3) while Colby Eddowes threw an outdoor season-best 11.16m (36-7.25).
Selase Sampram hurled a season-best 49.69m (163-0) to win the women's discus, and Michelle Ogbemudia was fifth with a season-best mark of 43.19m (141-8). Liya Guy threw 43.17m (141-8) in a sixth-place finish while Nyaluet Diew was 13th (35.66m/117-0).
Ogbemudia won the women's shot put to end the day's field events, throwing 14.78m (48-6), followed by runner-up Diew (14.15m/46-5.25). Guy was seventh with a career-best throw of 11.51m (37-9.25) and Miranda Burgett placed ninth with a collegiate-best mark of 11.38m (37-4).
A day after winning the women's pole vault, Bella Coscetti won the 400-meter hurdles with a time of 1:04.53.
Kenyon Parker won the men's high jump, clearing 1.87m (6-1.5), with Wetzel finishing second with a clearance of 1.75m (5-9).
A-State concluded the day by winning the men's 4x400-meter relay with a time of 3:19.57. Earlier in the day, the 4x100-meter relay quartet placed third, combining for a time of 41.73.
Matthew Williams was runner-up in the men's triple jump, leaping a season-best 14.08m (46-2.25).
In the women's 800 meters, Cadence Lapp (2:14.71) and Elizabeth Martin (2:16.81) ran personal-best times to place second and fourth. Marizenne Jonker placed 11th, running 2:23.59, and Hannah McLaughlin ran a season-best 2:28.28.
Handre Jonker clocked a personal-best 49.28 to place second in the men's 400 meters, with Jeremiah Green (50.43) and Josh Jones (50.51) placing seventh and eighth. Cheyenne Melvin finished third in the women's race (58.57), while Emma Guadagnoli (1:00.89) and Izzy Daines (1:02.60) placed seventh and eighth. Daines also finished seventh in the 100-meter hurdles with a wind-aided time of 14.81.
Parker finished sixth in the men's 100 meters, running a wind-aided 10.92 to lead four runners. CJ Burge ran a career-best 11.08 to place 13th, while Mehki Hoo (11.58w) and Spencer Taylor (12.00) also ran, placing 26th and 27th.
AJ Allen led three women in the 100 meters, running a wind-aided 12.63. Je'Breiya Chapman finished in 12.67w and Madison Holloway crossed in 13.28.
The day opened with the 5000-meter races. Delaney Mulick ran a personal-best 18:16.63 to place fourth in the women's section, while Zeke McCain (8th, 15:57.62) and Matthew Dunsworth (9th, 16:00.73) competed on the men's side.
