OXFORD, Miss. (4/6/24) – Three Arkansas State track and field athletes won their respective events on Saturday to cap a strong collection of performances at the Joe Walker Invitational.
Rahel Broemmel moved up to fourth in program history in the women's 800 meters, winning with a time of 2:10.40. Emma Guadagnoli ran a personal-best 2:16.39 in an 11th-place result, ahead of Marizenne Jonker (2:18.55) in 12th place.
Josh Jones won the men's 400-meter hurdles, running a career-best 52.45. Jones also placed fourth in the 110-meter hurdles, running a collegiate-best 14.37, and Kenyon Parker finished in 14.62 to place seventh.
Menachem Chen captured the men's discus crown with a collegiate-best toss of 53.19m (174-6) while Chris Boyd finished second by throwing the implement 51.37m (168-6). Willem Coertzen recorded a season-best mark of 50.63m (166-1) to place fourth, while Noa Isaia rounded out the top 10 in 10th, throwing 46.49m (152-6).
Earlier in the day, Parker cleared a career-best 2.09m (6-10.25) in a runner-up finish in the men's high jump.
Matthew Williams placed third in the men's triple jump with a mark of 13.58m (44-6.75) after clocking a time of 11.53 in the men's 100 meters. He finished behind CJ Burge, who crossed in 11.16.
Newcomer Reneisha Andrews was fifth in the women's 100 meters with a time of 11.94 that tied for 10th in A-State outdoor history. AJ Allen (12.85) and Je'Breiya Chapman (12.97) also competed, placing 19th and 20th.
In the men's shot put, Coertzen hurled a season-best 17.66m (57-11.25) in a fourth-place finish, while Boyd (15.16m/49-9) and Isaia (13.73m/45-0.5) placed 11th and 17th.
Liya Guy threw a collegiate-best 46.10m (151-3) to place seventh in the women's discus, while Michelle Ogbemudia led four athletes in the women's shot put with an eighth-place mark of 15.92m (52-2.75). Selase Sampram was 10th (15.37m/50-5.25) while Nyaluet Diew (14th, 13.69m/44-11.0) and Guy (20th, 11.25m/36-11.0) rounded out the quartet.
Spencer Taylor (7th – 48.52) and Mehki Hoo (9th – 49.26) finished inside the top 10 in the men's 400 meters, with Handre Jonker following in 14th with a time of 49.91.
Bella Coscetti finished fifth in the women's 400-meter hurdles, running 1:03.55. Tyra Nabors placed eighth in the 100-meter hurdles, running 14.25, while Alexis Taylor finished in 14.79 to place 14th.
In the men's 1500 meters, Rylan Brown clocked a personal-best 3:57.21 to place 12th, while freshman Abbey Coberly finished 19th in the women's race with a collegiate-best time of 4:47.67. Benny Brenneman placed 24th in the men's 800 meters with a time of 2:00.91.
The Red Wolves' men's 4x100-meter relay opened afternoon action on the track, finishing third with a combined time of 42.20. A-State's 4x400-meter relay squads later ended the day with top-five finishes. The women's quartet placed second with a time of 3:57.43 before the men finished fifth, completing the race in 3:17.24.
