MOBILE, Ala. (5/15/26) – Junior thrower
Menachem Chen secured the second gold medal of his collegiate career at the Sun Belt Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championships and three more Arkansas State athletes reached the podium on Friday.
Chen won the men's shot put title by a margin of 1.03 meters after posting a personal-best distance of 19.11m (62-8.50). The Red Wolves' 12th Olympian now holds the second-farthest shot put throw in program history and is the 13th A-State men's athlete to win an outdoor conference title in the event.
Jared Moore claimed fifth place with a 17.88m (58-8.00) throw and moved to 10th place in the Red Wolves' outdoor shot put history.
Erika Krueger and
Kiara Strayhorn earned silver medals during the day, with the former posting a personal-best time of 10:37.84 in the women's 3000-meter steeplechase while the latter registered a distance of 6.29m (20-7.75) in the women's long jump.
Selase Sampram secured bronze in the women's shot put with a 16.22m (53-2.75) mark.
Colby Eddowes advanced to the men's 110-meter hurdle finals on a 13.75 time while
Spencer Taylor's personal best of 46.84 and
Sheldon Richardson's 47.65 mark secured spots in the men's 400-meter finals. Taylor's time stands as the eighth fastest in A-State's outdoor history, and he is one of two athletes (Jermie Walker, 2021) to move inside the top 10 since 2012.
Brandon Williams (1:50.13),
Joe Edwards (1:50.39) and
Brett Jacobs (1:51.30) also recorded top 10 finishes in the men's 800-meter prelims and qualified for the final round.
JoJo Modile advanced in the women's 100-meter hurdles with a time of 13.84 and
Syriah Boyd's 53.65 mark in the women's 400 meters resulted in a spot in the final round.
Mia Conroy also moved past the prelims after setting a personal best at 2:09.16 in the women's 800 meters.
A-State holds second place in the men's team standings with a total of 55.5 points through eight events. The women's squad enters the final day of competition at third place with 41 points over seven events.
