Ronnie Maglaughlin traded a basketball for a javelin and became ASU's third qualifier for the NCAA Regional Championship enroute to winning her event at the Ole Miss Invitational Saturday.
Maglaughlin, who just completed her senior season with the Lady Indian basketball team, threw the javelin 142-8 to win the event and meet the qualifying standard for the regional meet in May. It is the second straight year Maglaughlin has qualified. Pole vaulter Sara Young and shot putter Isaiah Rucker have already met the standard.
“Ronnie did a great job,” said ASU Head Coach Jay Flanagan. “The weather was horrible. It was about 37 degrees and windy. Nobody could really have a very strong meet because of the weather, but she did very well.”
Flanagan also noted a few other performances including Candice James who finished fourth in the 3,000-meter steeplechase with an improved time of 12:12.39 and a time of 5:06.16 in the 1500-meter run.
Young, a transfer from Clemson, was second in the pole vault with 10-11 ? and tried her hand at the javelin throw with 88-4. Other field event results include a tie for 12th in the high jump with Angela Patterson and Brittney Leftwich each jumping 4-7 and a 17-11 ? long jump by Dominique Dawson. Teammate Kristiina Alatalo added 17-0.
Dawson also clocked 12.36 in the 100-meter dash with Brittney Bell running 12.37 and Latavia Shores 12.49. Bell also ran 25.49 in the 200 and Hayley Hames had 5:40.88 in the 1500.
In the men's division, the Indians had success in the field events with freshman Zach Richard finishing fourth in the high jump with 6-2 ? and Jeremy Willis jumping 15-1 for fourth. Sam Stout finished seventh in the vault with 13-7 ?. In the shot put, Rucker was fourth with 53-1 ?, and Darreal Beal was seventh in the long jump with 22-7 ?.
Also competing in the long jump were Shawn Aronson with 22-1 ?, Yuriy Morozov had 22-0 ? and B.J. Parish jumped 21-11 ?. Jesse Williams was seventh in the discus with 153-2, while Rucker threw 136-11 and Parish 122-10. In the hammer throw, Nathan Roop tossed the implement 156-0, Rucker had 145-11 and Williams 135-10. Joining Rucker in the shot put was Roop with 39-5 ? and Parish with 37-3 ?.
In the running events, Corey Jackson completed the 100 in 11.41 and the 200 in 23.30. Also in the 100-dash were former football standout James Johnson with 11.43 and Tony McKinny with 12.30. The 400-dash featured an eighth-place finish by Kevin Chapin with 49.86, a 10th-place showing by Andre Shell with 50.07 and Jon Waldorf's 55.58.
Jerrod Fassler turned in a time of 2:00.23 in the 800-meter run, while Nathan Mattox ran 2:16.44. Mattox also ran 4:26.51 in the men's 1500 following Brad Reach's 4:12.19. Chris Pickle finished the 5,000 in 17:40.89. Michael Fields was ASU's lone hurdle entry with a time of 1:02.65 in the 400-meter intermediates.
Arkansas State travels to Denton, Texas, April 15 for the North Texas Invitational. Events get underway at 10 a.m.
