BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (2/7/21) – It was a super Sunday for Arkansas State track and field, especially its distance athletes, featuring a pair of school records and multiple top-two results at the Jaguar Invitational, held at the Birmingham CrossPlex.
The Red Wolves accounted for 17 personal-best performances, 14 top-three finishes and six victories.
Pauline Meyer opened the day by crushing Kristina Aubert's 10-year-old school record in the women's 3000m, winning in 9:32.73. Elizabeth Martin placed sixth, running a personal-best 10:07.26 that moved her up to ninth in A-State indoor history in the event. Ethan Mychajlonka then followed it up with a win in the men's race, running a season-best 3:37.73, with Coleman Wilson finishing second in a personal-best 8:39.19.
Later in the day, Lexington Hilton shattered the men's 5000m program record by nearly 20 seconds, running an impressive 14:17.69 to place second in the event. Sarah Trammel notched the top spot in the women's race, running a personal-best 17:24.78 that ranks fifth in school history.
Seth Waters also earned a runner-up finish in the men's 800m, notching a personal-best of 1:51.65.5
Evangelynn Harris and Chastery Fuamatu went 1-2 in the women's shot put with personal bests. Harris launched a throw of 15.92m (52-2.75) in her victory to move up to second all-time at A-State in the event indoors. Fuamatu's toss of 14.92m (48-11.5) moved her up to No. 5 in the indoor record books.
Grace Flowers took the women's weight throw by uncorking a personal-best throw of 19.88m (65-2.75), while Fuamatu also finished with a personal-best 18.15m (59-6.75) to place third. On the men's side, Eron Carter claimed the victory with a personal-best throw of 20.61 (67-7.5), moving him up to second in school history in the event. Aimar Palma Simo placed second with a mark of 18.97m (62-3.0).
In the women's 60m hurdles, Rainee Bowers clocked a personal-best 8.66 in the final to place second. Camryn Newton-Smith advanced through the prelims with a season-best time of 8.51 in the prelims, but succumbed to a false start in the final. In the prelims, Allie Hensley bested her previous PR with a time of 9.20.
The Red Wolves are slated to be back in action Friday, Feb. 12, traveling to Topeka, Kansas, for the Division I Challenge, hosted by Washburn University.
