LOS ANGELES (4/14/22) – A pair of Arkansas State track and field school records fell on Thursday evening, with Camryn Newton-Smith taking down the heptathlon record before Sophie Leathers capped off the night by capturing the women's 10,000m mark.
Competing in her first heptathlon since the 2019 season, Newton-Smith capped off a strong two days of competition to shatter the school record in the event.
The Greenbank, Australia, native totaled 5,482 points across the seven events, breaking Shundra Smith's previous record of 5,377 set in 1996. Newton-Smith placed ninth overall and posted personal bests in the high jump (1.70m/5-7.0), 200m (26.23), long jump (6.11m/20-0.5) and 800m (2:27.38). Her long jump mark also ranks fifth all-time.
Fellow Australian Isabel Daines also put together a strong performance across two days in the heptathlon, placing fifth overall in her group with 5,187 points, which ranks seventh in program history. Daines opened on Wednesday with three collegiate bests in four events – the 100m hurdles (14.59), high jump (1.64m/5-4.5) and 200m (26.82) – before posting bests in the long jump (5.43m/17-11.75), javelin (43.31m/142-1.0) and 800m (2:23.62). Her javelin mark is good enough to rank fourth in program history.
While much of Jonesboro was nestled all snug in their beds, Leathers broke A-State great Kristina Aubert's 10,000m time by winning her section at the Mt. SAC Relays with a time of 33:48.24.
Sarah Trammel opened up the day at Azusa Pacific by winning the women's 10,000m open race, finishing in 35:11.65 and moving up to second in school history. Later in the day, Cheyenne Melvin posted the third-best 800m time in A-State outdoor history, finishing in 2:08.42. Seth Waters followed in the men's 800, crossing the finish in 1:49.70, which stands sixth in program history.
Jacob Pyeatt clocked a personal best in the 5000m, finishing 22nd in 14:32.93 to rank third in program history.
At the Pacific Coast Intercollegiate hosted by Long Beach State, Aimar Palma Simo improved on his second-best all-time outdoor mark in the hammer throw, placing third overall with a toss of 65.81m (215-11.0).
Chastery Fuamatu hurled a personal best in the women's discus, placing 14th with a throw of 48.09m (157-9.0). Evangelynn Harris led the way in the women's shot put with a sixth-place throw of 15.09m (49-6.25) while Selase Sampram moved into the all-time top 10 with a toss of 14.28m (46-10.25), which is good for ninth in program outdoor history.
Also at Mt. SAC, Bennett Pascoe placed seventh in the men's steeplechase invitational, finishing in 8:48.67. Elizabeth Martin moved up to fourth in school history in the women's steeplechase, crossing the line in 10:49.82.
