OXFORD, Miss. (4/7/23) – Rahel Broemmel set a school record in the women's 1500 meters on Friday to highlight a strong opening day for Arkansas State track and field at the Joe Walker Invite.
The freshman clocked a time of 4:22.43 in a fourth-place finish and was one of several A-State athletes with standout showings. Fellow frosh Hannes Fahl finished second in the men's 1500 meters with a time of 3:45.78 that is fourth in school history.
In the 5000 meters, a combined eight athletes (5 men, 3 women) recorded career-best marks. Jaybe Shufelberger won the women's race, crossing in 16:36.82 – a time that is third in school history. Sarah Trammel (4th – 16:42.42) and Sophie Leathers (7th – 16:54.14) bettered their previous best marks.
Jacob Pyeatt moved up to second in program history in the men's 5000, placing fourth with a time of 14:18.42. Dawson Mayberry placed fifth with a time of 14:30.48 to rank fifth in school history, while Grayson Young's sixth-place time of 14:30.77 is eighth best. Nathan Herbst (11th – 14:52.73) and Nati Enright (16th – 15:11.24) also registered personal bests.
Bradley Jelmert captured the men's pole vault crown, clearing an outdoor-best 5.43m (17-9.75), while Lauren Beauchamp vaulted a season-best 3.92m (12-10.25).
Camryn Newton-Smith earned a runner-up finish in the women's javelin, tossing the implement 45.09m (147-11).
In the men's 200 meters, Jermie Walker (21.22) and Myles Thomas (21.26) placed second and third, respectively, while Danarrion Ard clocked a career-best 21.62 to place 10th. Jonae Cook finished third in the women's race with a time of 23.79.
Cheyenne Melvin placed fourth in the women's 800 meters, crossing in 2:08.83.
In the men's hammer throw, Aimar Palma Simo placed fifth with a toss of 66.09m (216-10).
A pair of Red Wolves recorded career bests in the men's long jump, with Will Hart leaping 6.47m/21-2.75 and Steffan Mallory II jumping 6.37m/20-10.75.
