Nutt joined the A-State men’s basketball staff as an assistant coach in 1987 and continued in that role before serving as head coach from 1995-08, the second-longest tenure in program history (13 seasons). The two-time National Association of Basketball Coaches District 9 Coach of the Year led Arkansas State to its first Sun Belt Conference championship in 1997-98 with a 14-4 record in league play. In 1998-99, he guided A-State to a second-place finish in the regular season before winning the conference tournament crown with a 65-48 victory over Western Kentucky in the championship game. Nutt coached A-State to its first NCAA Tournament appearance at the Division I level, and he tallied 189 wins in his tenure. Named the 1998 Sun Belt Conference Coach of the Year, Nutt coached two-time Sun Belt Conference Player of the Year Chico Fletcher and 20 all-conference selections, including 14 First Team All-Sun Belt Conference picks.
