Hall of Honor
An American South Conference pole vault champion. He vaulted in the 1996 Olympics for the United States. In 1998, he was ranked #1 in the United States and #2 in the world; and received the Jim Thorpe Award as the Best American Field Events Athlete of the year. In 1999, he set the American records for both indoor and outdoor vaulting; was ranked #1 in the U.S. and #2 in the world; and again received the Jim Thorpe Award. In June of 2000, in a meet in Jonesboro, Hartwig broke his own American outdoor record for the 4th time by vaulting 19’-9 ½”. In 2001, he was ranked #1 in the U.S. and then on March 10, 2002, he set the American indoor record (which still stands) by vaulting 19-9. At the end of 2002, he was ranked #1 in the world. In 2008, he represented the United States in the Olympics for the second time.
