Malham served on ASU's defensive football staff from 1971-84. While at ASU, he served as defensive coordinator working with defensive ends and linebackers as well as special teams and helped to make the Tribe defense one of the most feared in the Southland Conference. He worked with his son, Mike Malham, Jr., who starred at linebacker at ASU before going on to a successful career with the Chicago Bears and now is a successful coach at Cabot High School. In 1975, ASU's defense led the nation in quarterback sacks (43) and yards throwing opponents for losses (580).

Prior to joining ASU, Malham spent 22 years as a head high school coach for Clinton, Little Rock Catholic, and Little Rock McClellan.

Malham, who was inducted into the Arkansas Sports Hall of Fame in 1998, was inducted in June 2006 into the Hall of Fame at the University of Central Arkansas where he was a three-year letterman in football. While at UCA, Malham helped the school to an Arkansas Intercollegiate Conference co-championship in 1948. That year he also was selected to play in the Kickapoo Bowl. He was voted into the Arkansas High School Sports Hall of Fame in 1998 and is a past president of the Arkansas High School Coaches Association. He coached in the first Arkansas All-Star basketball game and was a head coach during the 1959 high school all-star football game.
