Dorton, who played offensive guard for ASU from 1968-71, came to the Indians after playing quarterback at Nettleton High School and only two years of football overall. Considered the strongest player on the ASU team at that time, the 6-1, 246-pounder bench pressed almost 400 pounds. 

While playing for ASU, he was named to All-Southland Conference team three times, once as a first-teaminer in 1971 and twice as honorable mention selections in 1970 and 1969. He went on to earn All-America honors in 1971 by the Associated Press. He was an AP honorable menion All-America pick in 1970. 

Dorton was also chosen as a member of the Southland Conference All-First Decade Team which included players from all Southland Conference members from 1964-73. The Commercial Appeal in Memphis named Dorton to its All-Mid South Team as chosen by professional football scouts. 

ASU fans picked Dorton in 1976 as a member of ASU's All-Time Team from 1909-75. He played in the Senior Bowl and the North-South Shrine Game in 1971.
