Dwane Brown is the winningest QB in Arkansas State history, finishing his career with 34 wins in his four years as a starter (1984-87) … He signed with A-State out of Memphis Melrose High School and redshirted his first season in 1983 … He took over as the starter in 1984 and went on to start more games (51) than any other quarterback … Brown led Arkansas State to four straight winning seasons and four straight Division I-AA playoffs, including an appearance in the National Championship game in 1986 … A-State also won the Southland Conference in 1985 and 1986 with Brown operating as its signal caller … From 1984-87, Arkansas State was 38-14-2 and finished with rankings of 10th, 6th, 2nd and 12th nationally in the NCAA polls during his reign as QB … Brown was called by Larry Lacewell, "the premier quarterback in the Southland Conference and the best wishbone QB in the country" … During Brown's tenure at Arkansas State, he ended his career with very impressive numbers: 5,672 yards of total offense (No. 2 in A-State history at the time), 3,480 yards passing (also No. 2 at the time) and 2,192 yards rushing (top rushing quarterback in A-State history to this day) … Brown was the top rushing QB in the Southland Conference all four years … He was named the Southland Conference Freshman of the Year in 1984 … In 1985, he was named honorable mention All-Southland Conference ... He led A-State to the National Championship game in 1986 and was named the Southland Conference Player of the Year before earning AP Honorable Mention All-America honors in 1986 and 1987.
