A four-year letterman, Fred Shepherd is one of the most heralded and most popular players to play the sport of basketball at Arkansas State. The personable Shepherd enrolled at ASU in 1989 after a solid career at Marked Tree High School and was known as playing larger than life throughout his career. 

The 6-6 Shepherd scored 1,085 points during his career which ranked inside the top 20 of ASU's 1,000-point club until recently and grabbed 782 career rebounds to rank seventh at the time of his Hall of Honor induction. Shepherd owns a career field goal percentage of .611 which is fourth on the all-time chart and had 76 career blocked shots, also fourth all-time. 

His field goal percentage of .692 is second on the all-time single season chart and he led his team in blocked shots three straight seasons. He is third on the list of all-time winningest Indians with 70 wins. 

A two-time All-Sun Belt Conference pick, Shepher was also a NABC All-District 8 second-team selection in 1992-93 and a Basketball Times All-South honorable mention pick that same year. Shepherd was an honorable mention All-Deep South choice by Basketball Weekly in 1993 and was the Mercantile Bank Most Valuable Player as a junior and senior. 

Shepherd went on to play professional ball in Westchester, N.Y., for the United States Basketball League and then for several years in Spain.
